Rediscovering Childlike Wonder: A Journey Back to Ourselves
We had it right at first. Back in pre-school. When we looked at the world with a spirit of childlike wonder—when life was filled with endless possibilities and the simplest things brought us joy. If we were privileged enough, our needs were met, and everyone around us thought we were wonderful. People cheered us on without hesitation, celebrating our every step, no matter how small.
I wonder if that’s what’s missing in the world today—the ability to look at each other with that same kind of wonder. The kind that acknowledges the divine energy within each person. When did we stop believing in the magic of simply being? Why did we make it so hard to keep helping each other along? What robbed us of our sense of abundance?
When did life become a competition?
Why don’t we make it normal to cheer each other on?
Every day, I navigate the world with the awareness that I am a whole, grown, 36-year-old Black man—moving through spaces that often demand I harden myself to survive. And yet, I find myself fiercely protective of the original boy within me. The one I have faint but fond memories of. Memories too precious to let fade, too vital to simply give up.
I still want to know the joy of what if? I want to feel the excitement that comes with childlike wonder. I want to play in the sandbox with you, to dream freely, and to believe that anything is possible.
Is that so bad?
In a world that constantly pushes us to measure, compare, and compete, I think the real revolution is reclaiming the innocence we once knew—the belief that life is abundant, and that success is sweeter when shared. Maybe the answer isn’t in pushing harder but in embracing the beauty of simplicity and connection.
So, I choose to remember. I choose to wonder. And I choose to cheer you on. Because we all deserve to be seen, celebrated, and encouraged—just like we did back when we had it right.
Let’s make that normal again.
